ART FOR BLACK WOMEN AND GIRLS

Known for her bold colors and striking portraiture, Pittsburgh artist Jasmine Green, aka Black Girl Absolute, uses visual and written works to challenge the limiting perceptions of Black womanhood that leave Black women and girls feeling dehumanized, disempowered, and regulated into the margins. She is self-taught, engaging in an active artist practice for over 10 years with a primary focus on acrylic paint and the written word. In her ten-year journey curating visions of power, love, and peace alongside capturing the struggle of what it means to be Black in America, Jasmine provides a mirror in which we can all finally recognize that we have always been, and always will be, more than enough, no matter what or whom tries to tell us otherwise.

Jasmine is currently the Director of Education for 1Hood Media Academy. In this role, her aim is to provide artists, students, and families the tools to self-actualize the futures they envision for themselves.

Jasmine recently became the first ever awardee of the Exposure Tongue River Artist / Activist Residency, a program of the Pittsburgh Foundation’s Exposure Artist Program in partnership with the Opportunity Fund and Tongue River Residency. Exposure is a new arts funding initiative which aims to elevate the work of artists through activities that create/generate/enhance visibility for the creative process, artwork and societal issues of our time.

During this residency, Jasmine will be working towards her first ever publication, A Field Guide for Blue Girls, a book of art and poetry speaking on the struggles of dealing with mental illness as a Black woman.
